FAQ's
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What age can students join BARTA from?
BARTA train children and young adults from school years 2 up to the age of 21.
How long are BARTA classes?
Classes are 2 hours for our younger students (school years 2 - 6) with 40 minutes dedicated to each skill of acting, singing and dancing. Classes are 3 hours for older students (school years 6 - age 21) with 1 hour dedicated to each skill of acting, singing and dancing.
During show periods it may be, usually is, necessary to extend rehearsal times for students. Parents will be notified if this is the case dependent on the rehearsal requirements of the show.
Do you offer trial classes?
Yes, all students can have a trial class to see if they like BARTA classes and what we have to offer. In addition to the initial trial session we are so confident that new students will love BARTA that we also offer a 4 week ‘no quibble’ guarantee.
The way this works is the child attends a trial class. If they enjoy the class the fees for the term will need to be paid before their second class. Unlikely but if within the first 4 classes of attending BARTA they are not satisfied with the training BARTA deliver then we will happily return the first terms fees in full. This effectively gives the child / parent 4 weeks to make sure BARTA is right for them.
Is there a uniform?
Yes, BARTA students are required to wear a BARTA TShirt to all classes.
The first TShirt is provided free of charge.
Additional TShirts, hoodies, leggings and jogging bottoms can be purchased via the clothing page on the BARTA website.
BARTA students should wear their TShirt, black leggings / jogging bottoms suitable for dance and movement and jazz shoes / gym slippers or other footwear suitable for dance to classes.
How much are term fees?
Term fees are £209 a term for a 2 hour class, £299 a term for a 3 hour class and £299 per term for an Elite class. This works out to be approximately £8 per hour during a normal term and significantly less than £8 per hour during show terms.
Do you offer sibling discount? Yes
2 children - 25% discount on youngest childs fees
3 children - 50% discount on youngest childs fees
4 children - 100% discount on youngest childs fees
Do you offer bursaries?
Yes, BARTA offer bursaries to low income families to enable children who would not ordinarily be able to attend classes access BARTA. Parents should be able to demonstrate low income e.g. universal credit to qualify for a full or part bursary.
How long is a term?
Each term is 12 weeks and there are 3 terms in a year. We have a break during half terms and Easter, Christmas and Summer. Term dates can vary depending on school holidays and when Easter falls. Parents should contact the local BARTA Theatre Academy principle for specific term dates for each academy.
Do I need to give notice if my child is not returning?
Yes, to aid creative and financial planning, after the completion of one term or 12 classes at BARTA, all students are required to give half a terms notice or to pay half a terms fees in lieu of notice. This is essential for the creative teams planning, for example, blocking and spacing in show rehearsals but also to ensure we aren’t turning children away due to lack of space when we have a space we aren’t aware of.
Do I need to pay a show fee in addition to term fees?
No, BARTA shows are financed through term fees and tickets sales.
Do I need to provide my child with their costumes for BARTA shows?
No, BARTAs intention is to make the child show experience a fun and professional experience. We also need consistency across the costumes we use in our shows. With this in mind we create or hire our own costumes for BARTA shows. Students may be asked to provide accessories for the shows such as jazz pumps, tights, hair nets, cycle shorts but not main costume.
What if we can't attend a class one week?
Please email BARTA to advise that your child will be absent. Please keep absence to an absolute minimum as it affects the child's learning but also affects the learning of other students on the class especially during terms when we are rehearsing for a show.
Technology
We have recently implemented a technology ban in our classes. Technology is everywhere and many children are attached to a device morning and night. We need students to be present in our classes, to engage themselves creatively and to engage with the teacher and students in the room. In order for this to work students are asked to leave their devices off and in their bags for the whole session.
